The Future Farming Investment Scheme (FFIS) is a capital grant scheme designed to help eligible active farmers and crofters improve the efficiency, sustainability or environmental performance of their agricultural business.

FFIS offers upfront capital funding that can cover up to 100% of eligible investment costs. The maximum level of grant is determined by the total area of eligible agricultural land (excluding common grazing shares) that businesses declared on their Single Application Form (SAF) on 15 May 2025.  There is no minimum amount of support that can be applied for.

For more information, see the Scheme Guide

You can get Numnuts® with the FFIS grant

The FFIS grant will pay you up to 100% of castration and tail docking devices as per the list of FFIS a-z eligible and not eligible capital items. This includes the Numnuts® device and can include some other useful items to support your operations and improve efficiency. Take a look at the Numnuts device and our ring dispenser in the online shop.

What else might be useful?

Along with the Numnuts® device and ring dispenser, many farmers marking older lambs use a lamb marking cradle or chute instead of holding and restraining the lamb whilst the lamb has various husbandry procedures applied or administered.

Cradles

Cradles allow the lamb to be secured, freeing up hands or even another worker to help apply tags, administer a vaccine or pick up the next lamb – all improving efficiency.

We recently met Tommy from Smyth Agri, based in Northern Ireland who designed and builds these single lamb chutes with a convenient release lever.

This chute holds the lamb securely and comfortably and hangs on a race hurdle or fence bar. It leaves the handler free to get the next lamb or get on with castration and tailing (using Numnuts®) and vaccinations, tagging etc.

When the lever is released, the lamb drops comfortably back on to its feet into a separate pen or back into the flock.

Chutes

Farms with larger mobs and a team of workers can utilise a chute similar to the Te-Pari Vetmarker.

As the lambs are placed at the top end of the chute each task can be applied or administered by a worker as the lamb moves down the slope. Like the cradle, the lamb is released at the end by a simple lever, freeing the lamb to walk away.

See Numnuts® in use alongside the Te-Pari Vetmarker here.
